A Rose for Venice

Blog by Alex Barendregt: "So, there it is - A Rose for Venice, captured by national media in Italy, and as I was on site, captured also from my side. But let me tell you first. So we have been celebrating bodypainting and installation artist Elena and Mattia's wedding the day before and the weather forecast didn't look good, in fact, on the day of this amazing art project the weather was shit as hell. I didn't expect that this can even happen. Packed with our gear, soaked wet from head to toe, Anna and I got finally to the square San Marco.
Rain was pouring, hundreds of volunteers waiting under the arches but still very optimistic that Elena can pull it off.
Check it out, turn up the volume to get the mood.

+++ Official press release +++ Artist Elena Tagliapietra reimagines “The Feast of the ROSE” in one of the worlds most famous landmarks, the “Piazza San Marco”, on the 25th of April, with a massive art performance creating an iconic image. The writer Alberto Toso Fei tells the ultra millennial story behind this tradition.
Venice, a city famous for its secrets, has a tradition older than Valentine’s Day, and older and more tragic than the story of Romeo and Juliet.
The festival marks the anniversary of the tragic story of young love gone wrong, from when the daughter of a nobleman fell in love with a soldier of poor fortune. The romance ended in the death of both youths, the last gesture of the young man having been offering her a rose.
Every April 25th for nearly 1200 years, the men of Venice have honoured the women in their lives by giving them a rose. The Festa del Bocolo, the Festival of the Rose, is one of the oldest and best kept secrets of the romantic city of Venice.
This year, the artist Elena Tagliapietra brought hundreds of local Venetians and a few handpicked international romantic travellers, to battle against the weather to create a massive rose from living people in the centre of the Piazza san Marco. This giant rose which she has called “A Rose for Venice” was a live performance for the people of Venice, accompanied by a spoken word poem by the writer Alberto Toso Fei. Official event of the Municipality of Venice, with the production of the Centro Teatro Attivo Srt, these artists will create an unforgettable experience that will live on in photos and in the memories of Venices citizens as a reawakening of their ancient passions.
The installation was a performance of modern art taking its roots in the love of this magical city. And just as love can conquer all obstacles, art can be created in all weather. +++ Video & Edit by Alex Barendregt WB Production / Purple Shift Studio

Sea Glam Gala: Sound & Fashion Charity Evening in favour of Reefvillage

Gabi Hajek-Renner (internationally distinguished artist, WBA member and multiple world champion in bodypainting as well as owner of Austria’s Makeup School) has been working together with light artist and underwater photographer Martin Aigner and a dedicated team under the name “Reefvillage – Creating New Life!” for the creation of new habitats for the preservation of the underwater world. A number of unique projects have already been launched to raise money for the construction of coral reefs in regions where natural reefs have been destroyed.

For example, in 2018 and 2019, the sale of the REEFCALENDER, which set a world record for bodypainting on the Philippine island of Negros and on the Maldives created new habitats for underwater flora and fauna. Another project was completed on Monday, August 30, 2021 at the Sea Glam Gala of the Schlosshotel Falkensteiner in Velden am Wörthersee. At the Sound & Fashion Charity Evening in favour of Reefvillage, visitors were able to marvel at an international fashion show led by Creative Director Wolfgang Reichl. Musically accompanied by Eurovision Song Contest participant Vincent Bueno. The highlight of the evening, however, was the auction of an impressive camouflage body painting which was created together with the leading and freshly baked Miss Europa 2021 Beatrice Körmer, Gabi Hajek-Renner and Martin Aigner.

Rachel Deboer ALS Call for support

Imagine Corona Virus wiping out your income, loosing your father to suicide and then being diagnosed with ALS all within a few months. This year has been a hard one for many people around the world but for Rachel Deboer in San Francisco the challenges have come hard and fast.

Rachel is a substitute teacher, facepainter and entertainer. Covid 19 decimated all three of those industries. Now she is in the beginning stages of finding a way to deal with her diagnosis for a condition that has a mortality rate of 20 to 48 months with 10-20% of ALS patients surviving longer than 10 years. Rachel has shown amazing strength in finding her way through the diagnostic process and searching through the therapy options.

This can be an isolating and exhausting process. We would like to fund a trip to the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria for 2021 including flights, accommodation and travel costs for Rachel. This would give Rachel a chance to connect to her international artistic family for a week of love and support.

Lets make this dream of returning to her special artistic home, come true. (The gofundme for her monthly medical costs is under another page)
Step 1. Make a donation, something you can afford to do on a regular basis or a once off larger sum.
Step 2. Make a short video, selfie or text post on social media with a message of love and support for Rachel.
Step 3. Share the gofundme link with your posting and tag Rachel so she sees your message!

Let your message be inspired by her! Paint your face, write a silly song or poem, put filters on your selfie or find your favorite quote. Let your moment of giving be a moment to lift and connect both of you. You don’t have to have met Rachel to be inspired by her and show some love.
This fund has the goal of being paid out before her trip to Austria in July 2021 unless travel restrictions make that impossible in which case other travel arrangements will be made with her.
Please don’t: Tell her how to think, feel or act about her diagnosis. This is her journey. Lets see how beautifully her networks can come together from all around the world to love one, as we would all want to be loved.
